The latest movement in Voodoo - Rootwork involves the reclamation of traditional African tribal religion. Voodoo is a religion borne of slavery - when various tribal factions were brought together under the roof of oppression in Haiti. These tribes then joined forces, assimilating each others religious beliefs which they hid under the guise of Catholicism - disguising their Gods as Christian saints. As a result of the fusion of tribes and the dissolution of tribal territories resulting from slavery, many of the old ways were lost. Rootwork is more of a mystical movement than a religious reclamation - where Voodooists strive to contact their ancestors and the old Gods to reinvent their lost religion.
